Patients who are missing most of their teeth or need to have them extracted can rest assured that they can restore their smile with beautiful, natural-looking full-mouth dental implants. Full-mouth dental implants are used to secure a denture in place and is a much more stable and comfortable option than traditional dentures!

You may be surprised to learn that dental implants are actually a healthier option as well! With no tooth root to stimulate bone growth, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate over time and change the structure of your face. Dental implants act as a tooth root and help encourage bone regeneration.

What is involved with full-mouth dental implants?

Before beginning any restorative treatment, your dentist will examine your mouth to determine if full-mouth dental implants are the best treatment path for your individual case. This exam may include x-rays and CT scans, photos, and diagnostic casts. Your dentist will provide you with a treatment plan to show you exactly what to expect and how much it will cost, they will also answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Once it is determined that you are a good candidate for full-mouth dental implants, your treatment can proceed. If you need any preparatory surgeries such as a bone graft, those will need to heal for up to six months before your implants can be placed. If you do not require such, your implant surgery can begin! You can’t expect:

  • Implant placement surgery using local anesthesia; 4 to 6 implants will be placed in one or both arches
  • You will wear a temporary denture while you heal for up to six months
  • Once your implants are fully integrated, your dentist will place your permanent denture

How do you maintain full-mouth dental implants?

As with any restoration, maintaining a good oral hygiene routine is key to keeping everything healthy! It is important to maintain regular twice-yearly hygiene appointments with your dentist though they may want to see you more often now that you have full-mouth dental implants. When you have your implants cleaned, your hygienist will remove the entire denture and clean the implants that you cannot reach on your own. While your porcelain implant crowns cannot develop cavities, you can still develop periodontal disease which will compromise the integrity of your entire dental restoration and possibly cause it to fail.

It is also important to follow up with the doctor who placed your implants at least once a year to allow them to check the integrity of the implants.

Any restoration should be protected with a night guard. Your dentist will likely recommend that you are fitted for one so that you do not damage your new teeth in your sleep. Night guards prevent damage caused by bruxism, which is the clenching and grinding of the teeth while we sleep.

If you do not want the hassle of a traditional denture, speak with your dentist about full-mouth dental implants!
